The United States has long been at the forefront of innovation, especially in the sciences. This is the nation that put the first man on the moon, pioneered research to map the human genome and even created the first solar cell. Yet the capacity and drive for innovation are now at stake under President Donald Trump’s administration.
In just his first few months of presidency, Trump’s aggressive attacks, through misinformation and budget cuts, may have permanently jeopardized America’s spot as the leading nation in innovation globally, especially medically. This will harm American industry, economy and public safety.
The nation’s budget crisis, a debt surpassing $38 trillion, has been the topic of presidential concern since Reagan’s time in office, and yet the issue has only grown more looming as the debt climbs exponentially. In the name of this grave issue, Trump is making drastic cuts to valuable industries and initiatives, including disease research and control and research sector innovation, seemingly without consultation. His decrees are made through Executive Order and possibly behind the backs of the U.S. citizens.
Trump’s main target with his cuts is research grants, and he has done so without consulting the very lawmakers in charge of protecting American citizens. The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation found that the White House Office of Management and Budget has been illegally directing NASA to implement Trump’s budget cuts without approval. These budget cuts will lead to safety issues, layoffs of almost a third of NASA staff and a loss of $46.4 billion in economic output.
Economic growth, however, is only a small part of how Trump’s drastic budget cuts will affect Americans. The National Library of Medicine reported cuts to the National Institute of Health funding by 18%. These institutes are responsible for many discoveries made in treating deadly diseases and managing disease outbreaks.
Without necessary resources, not only will Americans lose access to the best possible care for their issues, but global initiatives toward the discovery of treatments for major illnesses, like cancer and Alzheimer’s, will slow down or move away from the U.S. altogether. More people will become sick without new vaccinations, organized disease response and lack of treatments.
But Trump has made it clear that he does not care about the millions of people his administration affects. The Trump administration prioritizes enforcing their own education ideals and targets universities and places that do not align.
Columbia University is one such institution and has been subject to manipulation of the NIH grants that fund their projects. Many of these project terminations were sent to researchers in health equality for minority communities.
If Trump gets to decide what scientific research is or is not positive for America, he gets the power to apply his bias to what should otherwise be the most impartial sphere, academic research and discovery. This unrestricted control has already threatened key initiatives that aim to help minority communities, as seen with the Columbia University cuts.
Trump’s attack on research has become so widespread that it has been given a name: the US Brain Drain. Best defined in reports by Business Insider, thousands of scientists are considering or have already fled abroad to continue their research. Many of these scientists were involved in key health issues, including finding treatments for Alzheimer’s.
Other nations are accepting the talent now being forced out of the U.S. with open arms and large grants. They recognize the opportunity that America is leaving open to them. Take in the researchers who are leading such major innovations, and their nation can climb the global ranks to eventually displace America as number one.
Trump claims these budget cuts are necessary to solve the debt crisis, but experts in the U.S. Department of Budget expect that even slight cuts would cause massive economic losses. Furthermore, removing funding for major research grants will surely handicap American research, and this does not seem like an accident, as Trump himself said that “educated people hate me.”
From the start, Trump has run on a campaign of misleading and misinformation that mystifies and vilifies the scientific community. His self-appointed administration has repeatedly spread misinformation that includes RFK’s claim that the COVID-19 vaccine causes Autism. These claims only serve to scare Americans away from public health initiatives that would otherwise help keep them safe and healthy.
While the scientific community suffers in the dark, Trump only continues to push an agenda that silences important research and harms American citizens. Ultimately, the nation is at a tipping point between falling into ruin and rising to new heights and America’s fate lies in the hands of not only Trump but lawmakers, senators, and Supreme Court judges who hold the sole power to stop his actions. Trump cannot be allowed to act without checks and balances, otherwise, he will put America at risk.
