Special Needs teacher Randy Reichen is not from this world…He Has No TV
Q: What did you want to be growing up?
A: Well, I grew up on a farm. And I suppose by growing up on a farm, I always thought, well… I’ll be a farmer. I did that for a while after school, but, as things go, people don’t always finish up doing things they wanted to do. I then went to college and got a master’s degree in education and a bachelor’s business degree.
Q: What’s a typical outfit for high school Mr. Reichen?
A: Blue jeans and something a little above a colored t-shirt, and tennis shoes, mostly typical back then.
Q: What advice would you give to your high school self?
A: Not take yourself seriously, but take what you do seriously.
Q: What is your favorite book? Why?
A: Well, I tried to read the Bible, a few times. I suppose that’s a pretty good book to read.
Q: Who is your favorite celebrity?
A: I guess, although I have never seen him, Clint Eastwood. He is my neighbor. I live in the Carmel Valley.
Q: What’s your guilty pleasure on TV?
A: We’re kind of a weird family, I guess. We haven’t had a TV in the house for at least 10 years. There’s just so much to watch on TV, it just takes so much time. Although my daughters have already found TV shows on the Internet.
Q: What do you do? What is your job?
A: I work for the Santa Clara County Office of Education. They lease space from SCUSD for special need students here, to teach and work with them. I like my job, I really do. It’s rewarding. I enjoy it. We try to get the students out a little bit. We want them to feel part of something and not just this class. It is community-based, and we go out into the community and teach them basic life skills. They didn’t grow up like other students, and so we try to give them the best we can. Everybody is given gifts and we need to realize those gifts the best we can in however way.
