Vampire Academy: A Movie Worth Sinking Your Teeth into
February 12, 2014
Mix together high school drama, bloodsucking vampires, and elemental magic, and you’ve just summed up the movie “Vampire Academy.”
From the director of “Mean Girls” and the writer of “Heathers,” this new coming of age story is sure to capture the hearts of young lovers of “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” movies. Others however, will view it as a poor adaptation of a popular book series which falls short on the big screen.
The movie’s dark scenery and mood-setting music quickly thrusts audiences into a secret world filled with vampires and their protectors: the royal Moroi, the Dhampirs (the Moroi’s protectors), and the evil blood-lusting Strigoi.
The plot specifically focuses on two spunky high school teens, Rose Hathaway, a Dhampir, and Lissa Dragomir, a Moroi, who are supposed to be fighting their way through a world filled with dangerous vampires. But at times, the film seems to focus more on mysterious boys and oversexualized outfits than the foreboding bloodsuckers.
The script itself is filled with sarcastic remarks and pop-culture references that act as refreshing comical relief against the dark drama surrounding the plot, although the amount of snarky remarks gets repetitive as the movie goes on. The movie also deserves some credit for the impressive way it was filmed and its beautiful locations, as it made the audience feel as though they were walking through the halls of St. Vladimir’s Academy.
Overall the movie is sure to keep the audience intrigued with its one-liners and romantic plot twists, and although it fails to develop into anything more than soap opera set in high school, it is a dark comedy worth sinking your teeth into.
