Santa Clara Bruins to play Wilcox Chargers at Levi’s Stadium

Santa Clara High School’s rivalry with Wilcox continues – this time at newly built Levi’s Stadium.

The two teams will face off at Levi’s on Oct. 10, inaugurating the stadium’s Friday Night Lights event.  Later that evening, Elk Grove and Jesuit high schools will play.

Originally, the Wilcox Chargers and the Manteca Buffaloes were set to play Aug. 29 along with a game between Jesuit and De La Salle high schools, but a problem with the turf arose, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The San Francisco 49ers ended practice early Wednesday due to the fact that some players were slipping on the grass, the Bee said.

Because of this, Levi’s stadium opted to reschedule the high school games until October, giving Santa Clara High the possibility to play at Levi’s Stadium.

SCHS football coach Hank Roberts said, “To say that I am over-excited is an understatement.” And Roberts’s excitement transferred to the team when the coach told them the news in the locker room before practice.

“They were doing backflips,” Roberts said.

Although playing at such a large stadium is a new experience for the players, coaching at them is nothing new for Roberts, as he did so when he assisted at the University of Nevada.

“When I was at Nevada, I coached at the Seahawks’ stadium,” Roberts said.

The Wilcox Chargers pose a great challenge for the Bruins each time they encounter each other, since SCHS has not been able to beat Wilcox in about 30 years. Nevertheless, SCHS vice principal Tony Lam put these statistics aside.

“I think we’re going to win and make history. It’s going to be awesome,” Lam said.

Coach Roberts expects a large crowd on Oct. 10 and encourages the city to come see the game.

“The entire city of Santa Clara should be shut down… It doesn’t really matter what you have that night. You’ve got to come out to Levi’s Stadium that afternoon.”
