The varsity girls soccer team qualified for CCS for the third time consecutively with its 4-2 win Tuesday night against the Los Altos Eagles. The win followed on the team’s move into the more competitive De Anza league, which occurred this year.

The Bruins trailed behind the Eagles following the first half with a score of  0-1. Soon after the beginning of the second half, Los Altos scored again, making the score 0-2.

Goalkeeper Shannon Peterson admitted she felt uneasy about letting Los Altos gain the lead.

“Anytime a ball gets into the net while I’m in the goal, I get nervous, but I always have faith in my team,” said Peterson.

The girls did not stay down for long. Junior and forward Shaelan Murison scored the team’s first goal of the night, putting Santa Clara on the board with a score of 1-2.

“Once we scored that first goal, we got the momentum and the game was ours,” said head varsity coach Brad Comstock.

Murison went on to score two additional goals, scoring a hattrick. The other goal for the team was scored by midfielder Lolli Millan.

Following this game, the team’s league record stands at 6-3-2.
This is the third year in a row that the girls will appear in CCS, and the first following their successful second place CCS title last season.

“If someone would have told me at the beginning that we would have gotten this far, third place in our first year in the upper league, I wouldn’t have believed them,” said Comstock.

Team member Ellie Mujushi is excited to be able to return to the CCS field.

“It feels amazing being able to go to CCS again. Our team has worked so hard this season, and this is such a great accomplishment,” said Mujushi.

Before the match, Shannon Peterson and Jenna Murphy were acknowledged for being seniors.

The team plays their last game of the regular season against the Saratoga Falcons on Thursday, Feb. 12.
