Keep Algebra 1 teacher Mai Nguyen away from Korean soap operas

Mai Nguyen teaches Algebra 1 and she enjoyed being on the swim team in high school.

Q: What did you want to be growing up?

A: I’ve always wanted to be a teacher.

Q: Were your parents teachers?

A: There was a time where my dad (unofficially) taught in Vietnam.

Q: What’s your coffee order?

A: I usually just drink the Vietnamese coffee. If I do go to Starbucks I’ll just get the caramel frap.

Q: What’s your guilty pleasure?

A: I watch a lot of Korean soap operas. It pushes me away from reality…just being in that drama.

Q: What high school did you go to?

A: I went to Yerba Buena High School.

Q: What was the typical outfit for you in high school?

A: Our school had a common dress code, so I would just wear that.

Q: What advice would you give to your high school self?

A: Just be more involved.

Q: Most memorable high school experience?

A: I think it would be being in the swimming team.

Q: Did you break any records while on the swim team?

A: We won third place in a relay.

Q: What challenging classes did you take in high school?

A: I took AP environmental sciences.

Q: What specifically did you do in that class?

A: We went crawfish fishing for an experiment. One kid tried to fish a turtle in the creek!

Q: Did you take this class because you wanted to teach in the field of science?

A: At one point I did want to major in environmental sciences.

Q: What college did you go to?

A: San JoseStateUniversity.

Q: What was your most memorable teaching experience?

A: Helping a student who was struggling in the class, getting the student more involved, and knowing that he had learned something.
