“Who cares if I’m pretty if I fail my finals!”
This popular quote is from study-maniac Rory Gilmore, the main character from the 2000s’ show “Gilmore Girls.” Following a young mother-daughter relationship, “Gilmore Girls” takes place in a small town where everyone knows one another. Within the first episode, audiences learn a lot about Gilmore and her academic motivation that drives her to get into her dream high school, Chilton.
Whether I am studying for a simple test, attending school or doing my homework, Gilmore has been a role model to me because of her school-life accomplishments. Despite many controversial actions throughout her seven seasons, Gilmore does not disappoint with her academic achievements.
Gilmore’s dream was to go to Harvard and become a journalist. She had an entire wall dedicated to the college. To get one step ahead, she wanted to go to Chilton, an advanced private school that prepared students for college. With Chilton as the start of her plan towards Harvard, Gilmore was motivated to accomplish her goals. Despite the many obstacles to face, she did not let anything stop her from getting into her dream school.
In my library of many Spotify playlists sits a 26 hour long playlist titled “trying to be more like Rory Gilmore,” with a cover photo of her adorable smile with her iconic white knitted sweater. When I listen to this playlist, I become focused on the assignments in front of me. This playlist is the foundation of confidence and motivation I have with the work in front of me. Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers and The Smiths, all help me become productive throughout the day.
Also iconic for her amazing 2000s style of clothing, Gilmore has made her looks very popular. Sometimes during the week, I will show up to school with an outfit that looks similar to one she would wear in the show, inspiring me to work toward my goals in school because that is something she would do as well.
With the same mindset as Gilmore, my grades have improved since last year. I feel on top of my work and confident in my grades. Just a simple fictional character changed my school life for the better and the future to come.
