On Friday Aug. 30, 2024, SCHS faced the newly-opened Kathleen MacDonald High School in the first game of the season. It was the first varsity game for MHS Condors, but that did not stop the Bruins. Winning with a score of 40-0, SCHS dominated the game.
The Bruin’s run game could not be stopped, as they had 310 rushing yards and 45 passing yards for a total of 355 yards. The Condors had 152 total yards.
SCHS quarterback, sophomore Kalani Tesimale, stated that the Bruin’s run game was celebrated. He was glad to see how well the offensive line performed.
“I was very happy and grateful with how well my line did,” Tesimale said. “Our run game was just phenomenal.”
As a first-time varsity player, Tesimale believes there is a lot of pressure to perform, but he knows he has support. Tesimale is appreciative of his teammates and coaches for giving him an opportunity to prove himself and for effectively preparing him.
“I was hyped but also nervous, especially feeling kind of small as a sophomore, but my teammates really helped me get ready in the locker room,” Tesimale said. “I feel like we worked and learned a lot this week and Coach (Nelson) Gifford has put a lot of time in preparing me specifically for this game.”
The second quarter was packed with action for the Bruins, with them up by 12-0. Senior Tayshawn Reed ran for 59 yards but was stopped short of the end zone. After some back and forth, the Condors were not able to score.
Bruins junior Mason Nguyen ran for 30 yards. At the end of the second quarter, with just under two minutes, junior Joseph Manueli completed an 11-yard touchdown run, putting the Bruins up 26-0.
The third quarter began with the Condors throwing an interception. The Bruins were unable to score off the turnover, but it helped set them up for their victory.
Starting off the third quarter strong, Manueli put up a 45-yard touchdown run, increasing the Bruin lead to 33-0. Soon after, junior Quinn Raineri ran an 11-yard touchdown, ending the game with a final score of 40-0.
Senior tight end and linebacker Andrew Castillo had a positive look on their opening game win. With some physical violence and words being thrown during the game, he is relieved to have cooled the air with a victory.
“I feel great about settling our rivalry dynasty on a first-game win,” Castillo said.
Tesimale claims he is ecstatic about being a part of the Bruin community and cannot thank his supporters enough. Despite being an underclassman, Tesimale feels like he is part of more than just a team.
“I really feel like I am a part of a family with the Bruins. Even though I feel young, I feel included and important,” Tesimale said. “There are so many people pushing me and encouraging me. I am so grateful for the chance to play on varsity and rep the Bruins.”
