Coco & Clair Clair, the Atlanta pop-rap duo most popular for their hit singles “Pretty” and “Pop Star,” released their second studio album, “Girl.” Consisting of nine tracks, “Girl,” made its debut on Aug. 30, 2024. Reminiscent of “BRAT” by Charli xcx, Coco & Clair Clair’s new album is playful and confident while exploring more vulnerable motifs through a hyper-pop sound.
Their first track, “Martini,” introduces listeners to an addictive sound-cloud type of beat that tells a tale of a toxic relationship.
“You can’t lie to me in such a small town / You talk to her when I turn around / You say you miss me but hate my attitude,” Clair Clair sings.
A hyper-pop sound familiar to Coco & Clair Clair listeners flows through their third track, “Gorgeous International Really Lucky.” Through an infectious vibe reminiscent of PinkPanthress, Coco & Clair Clair share their raw take on what goes on in a girl’s mind when she has a new crush.
“I just wanna be enticing, tell me I’m enticing / (…) / You’re so cool / I wanna be with you / Everything you do / And in your dreams too,” Coco & Clair Clair sing.
When one has a crush, they often find themselves wanting to constantly impress that person. It is common for one to get jealous of that person’s past relationships, which can lead to feelings of jealousy and self-consciousness. “Gorgeous International Really Lucky” illustrates a relatable confession of love.
“Do you see me how I want you to see mе? / Do you think I’m cool if I watch this movie? / I looked at your ex / Shе looks like a floozy,” Coco sings.
“Everyone But You,” placed in the middle of the album, breaks their pop loop with a refreshing indie guitar. This instrumental shift becomes vulnerable while Coco & Clair Clair sing about learning how to handle toxic men. They both come to realize that they could care less about condescending guys.
“Talk to everyone but you / We try to warn girls about men like you / All you do is bite / You like it when you think that I’m dumb / I bet you’d like to think that I suck on my thumb,” Coco & Clair Clair sing.
Their seventh track, “My Girl,” reveals how tight knit Coco & Clair Clair’s friendship truly is. Through a Crystal Castles 2010’s feel, they relay the message that best friends are there to help each other through all the hate they may get from others.
“Don’t even like you a little bit / Thanks to your (expletive) / My girl and I just made a hit / That’s my girl yeah she hates you too / That’s my girl / That’s my girl / That’s my girl,” Coco & Clair Clair sing.
Their second to last track, “Graceland,” is a reclamation of confidence. In this ditzy bop, one can imagine Coco & Clair Clair walking through New York City feeling like hot girls. They are experiencing the invigorating city life together, making it even more worthwhile.
“Y’all know how to copy but you don’t know how to have it / Got more money than your favorite indie band / Did you miss me? / Back in the city with my bestie,” Coco & Clair Clair sing.
It is refreshing to see Coco & Clair Clair be vulnerable since they are known for their unserious lyrics and girly aesthetic. While the sound of this album is not different from their others, the production quality is better and the album itself is more cohesive than any of their other projects. Through addictive beats, Coco & Clair Clair’s new album, “Girl,” will make listeners feel like they are “that girl.”
