Tanghulu
Tanghulu, originating from China, is a candied treat with fresh fruit coated in melted sugar. This dessert is easy to make, requiring only sugar, water and any fruit of your choice. Combine the sugar and water into a saucepan, and dip in your fruit of choice. I used strawberries. The crunchy and delicious texture makes it one of my favorite and simplest recipes to make, and one I highly recommend people try.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound of fruit of your choice
- 3 cups granulated white sugar
- 1 ½ cups water
Directions:
Step 1: Wash the fruit, place on skewers and set to the side.
Step 2: In a pot, add in the sugar and water. Cook on medium heat for about 20 minutes.
Step 3: Dunk fruit skewers into melted sugar and transfer into a bowl with ice. Place on a baking sheet after the sugar has solidified.
Apple Crisp
Apple crisp is a classic dish. While more associated with fall, it is a timeless recipe that goes well with everything. It requires a good amount of ingredients and is relatively time-consuming, but it is overall fun to make and well worth the effort. A scoop of ice cream goes hand in hand with this treat as well, taking it to another level taste-wise. Despite the time, patience and amount of ingredients needed, this classic recipe is delicious and worth putting in the effort.
Ingredients:
- Apple Filling:
- 6 apples (I recommend Golden Delicious)
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- ¾ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 ½ tsp lemon juice
- Crisp Topping:
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- ¾ cup oats
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, diced into cubes
Directions:
Step 1: Add chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice in a mixing bowl. Stir to combine, then transfer to the prepared baking dish.
Step 2: In a separate bowl, add topping ingredients.
Step 3: Spread topping over apples in baking dish and gently pat to even it out. Bake for 40-50 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until golden brown.
Apple Pie Cookies
As the name suggests, each cookie is like its own mini apple pie. Despite its appearance, apple pie cookies are not too difficult to make. Lay out a pie crust dough and spread caramel sauce and apple pie filling over it. Then, layer it with strips of pie crust dough and top it with cinnamon, and you have yourself some nice, bite-sized apple pies. This is a dessert I absolutely love, and one I strongly suggest you try making.
Ingredients:
- 1 package rolled unbaked pie crust, which should have two rolls
- 1 can apple pie filling
- 1 tbsp sugar
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Directions:
Step 1: Transfer the apple pie filling to the food processor until chunky.
Step 2: Roll out one pie crust and cut into ¼ inch wide strips.
Step 3: Roll out the other pie crust and spread apple pie filling.
Step 4: Alternately place pie crust strips on top of the filling.
Step 5: Cut into circles (use either a cookie cutter or a cup) and sprinkle with cinnamon.
Step 6: Transfer to a prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
