Colombian American singer and songwriter Kali Uchis released her fifth studio album, “Sincerely,” on May 10, 2025. The album serves as a love letter to the most important people in her life. Throughout the 14 tracks and dreamy R&B sounds, Uchis takes listeners on an emotional journey through her experiences with love.
The opening track, “Heaven Is A Home…” shows that no matter what circumstances Uchis faces, she will feel at peace because she has her love that grounds her. She uses the sounds of harps to bring an angelic tone and make the song feel like entering “heaven.”
“Cause Heaven is a home / Wherever I’m with you, oh-oh / All I wanted was a home / And Heaven knows / That every word is true / I’m at home wherever I’m with you / …This is a story of a girl / Who was once imprisoned by her own mind / And freedom’s never felt this good,” Uchis sings.
“Sugar! Honey! Love!” brings back a melody familiar to Uchis’ 2015 song “Melting,” which was from her first album, “Por Vida.” The title can be seen as a collection of sweet nicknames for a significant other.
“Sugar! Honey! Love!” tells the story of almost giving up on love. After being hurt in past relationships, Uchis shares how difficult it was to picture getting married or finding something truly loyal and lasting.
“And I, I had almost given up hope / ‘Til I met a love so pure and true / Day I met you, babe, freed me from the fear / You put the blood back to my heart / Every day was gray, you put color back to my world / Sugar honey, you gave me so much more to live for,” Uchis sings.
The fourth track, “It’s Just Us,” opens with calm guitar riffs that create a relaxing atmosphere and a strong emotional connection. Uchis reflects on her past, highlighting when she was kicked out of her home as a teenager. Her early life experiences affected how Uchis saw love and family as an adult, making her question whether she could ever build a loving family of her own.
“When you smiled at me / Something changed in my brain chemistry / A love felt infinitely / Was my heart’s remedy, oh / Kicked out the house as a teen / But I was on my own much longer it seemed,” Uchis sings.
“Angels All Around Me…” explores common motifs in Uchis’ music: faith and divine protection. She talks about good karma, prayer and trusting that a higher power has helped bring love into her life.
“Certainly, divine protection / Keeps us safe from harm, all along / He’s merciful, He’s merciful, it’s true / ‘Cause every step I take / I know I’m not alone, not alone / The light covers me deep down to my bones / Yeah, angels watching over me,” Uchis sings.
The track stands out with its carefree vibe, like riding in a car with the windows down beside loved ones. The relaxed tone and instrumentation are reminiscent of Jalen Ngonda’s “If You Don’t Want My Love,” making it musically different from the rest of the album. Uchis blends her motifs of faith and gratitude, celebrating the love she has found with her husband and son.
“Never afraid / Don’t you ever walk in fear, baby / ‘Cause I’ll be / By your side every step of the way / And when I lay my head to sleep / I pray for our protection and peace / And every single time I wake / I pray that pain will stay away,” Uchis sings.
The second to last track, “Sunshine and Rain…” shows how no matter the season of life, having someone to go through it brings meaning and comfort.
“Through sunshine and rain, as seasons change / We all need somebody that makes the Earth feel heavenly / Maybe I’ll be that somebody ’cause you’re that someone to me / Soft as summer rain, you and I go good together / Lovers never say goodbye, let’s stay in love forever,” Uchis sings.
In “Sunshine and Rain…” Uchis also shares that even if love sometimes feels risky or reckless, those experiences teach her what love really means.
“I’ve always been a hopeless romantic (Ah-ah) / No matter how many times it went and did me damage (Ah-ah-ah) / At least I’m not scared to live, they’ll never understand / (Understand it),” Uchis sings.
In “ILYSMIH” the final track in the album, Uchis goes beyond the typical meaning of love. While most people think of love as something romantic, she reveals a deeper kind, one she discovered through the birth of her baby. It is a pure, overwhelming kind of love that she feels nothing else can compare to.
“I love my baby, nothing else compares / It’s something ’bout those brown eyes that leaves me full of tears / crying / All the world is crazy, but you’re here / My baby made me realize that nothing else even matters,” Uchis sings. “Ooh, I love you so much it hurts / And I can’t stop the tears, my baby’s really here / Ooh, I love you so much it hurts / He showed me what my life was really worth / Down here on earth.”
At this moment, Uchis is no longer just a wife in love – she is a mother – and that changes everything for her. She describes her mother-child bond as something powerful and unbreakable. Through becoming a mom, she has finally found the kind of family she always longed for, something she hints at throughout the album.
“For oncе in my life, I’m not alone anymore / See, my hеart had a dream to be a part of a family / Yeah, it took some time but this moment / Was worth all the pain / He’s living proof that dreams do come true / Look at you / Ooh, I love you so much it hurts / And I can’t stop the tears, my baby’s really here,” Uchis sings.
“Sincerely,” is a feel-good album that shows how love can change a person’s life. Uchis explores different kinds of love – romantic love, love from family and love inspired by faith. The soft, vintage-inspired sound mixed with R&B gives the album a calming, nostalgic feel.
At its heart, the album is about finally finding the people who make life feel like home. Uchis opens up about her past, how love helped her heal and how becoming a mother gave her a new beginning. “Sincerely,” is her way of showing gratitude to the people who mean the most to her. It is a reminder not to take love for granted and that the right kind of love can make life feel whole.
