On Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, the SCHS boys varsity basketball team won against the South San Francisco High School Warriors, ending in a score of 63-47.
The game started off neck-to-neck, with the Bruins slightly ahead of the Warriors 20-17. Because of their aggressive defense, however, SCHS received five fouls by the end of the first quarter.
Assistant coach Brentford Abrigo believed the game reflected the Bruins’ best versions of themselves, where they were simply playing without overthinking strategy and teamwork.
“We don’t want to play like any other team. We don’t want to play up. We don’t want to play down,” Abrigo said. “We want to play Bruins basketball, which is consistency, communication, dedication and effort for a whole four quarters.”
During the second quarter, the score gap between the two teams widened. The Bruins’ defense put more pressure on the Warriors, decreasing their scoring opportunities. At the end of the quarter, the Bruins were leading 32-25.
The point gap grew throughout the game, leading to the Bruins’ eventual win. Despite their victory, head coach Eric Kidd believes the team could further upgrade their skills.
“We can improve on our defensive side. We had a couple of backdoor cuts that we allowed.” Kidd said.
Recognizing the need for a better defense, the varsity team worked on it in the days leading up to the game. Senior Giovanni Hansen, who scored 12 points during the game, expanded on their practices.
“We’ve been really working on our press,” Hansen said. “We knew they were going to come out here and apply pressure.”
In the third quarter, the Bruins were able to pull ahead further. SCHS doubled the scoring output of South San Francisco, ending the quarter with a total score of 48-33.
Kidd attributed a big part of their success to sophomore Aaron Sun, who contributed to the Bruins’ victory with 11 points. Despite not being a starter, Sun was able to score efficiently and open up pathways for his teammates.
“Aaron usually comes in in the second half and gives us points, but he came off the bench today, and he brought a spark, not just on the offensive side, but the defensive side,” Kidd said.
Junior Tomer Katzir reflected on his experience during the game.
“Overall, we did really good today, especially in the last quarter,” Katzir said. “We definitely could’ve avoided all those fouls in the beginning, but in the end, we still won.”
So far this season, the Bruins have maintained an undefeated streak. Kidd explained that rather than winning being the goal of the team and the reason for their victory, it was the result of their hard work and effort.
“Our goal was not to be undefeated in four games but to communicate on defense, push the ball as much as we possibly can and just make a statement that we’re here for a while,” Kidd said.
