On Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, the SCHS girls varsity soccer team played their third game of the season against the Hillsdale High School Knights. Although the game was tough, the Bruins secured a 2-1 victory.
The Bruins went into the game wanting to strengthen their teamwork and have the right mindset while playing. Head coach Tammy Holleman noted that they were looking to accomplish better cooperation and preparation going into the game.
“Come in very settled, relaxed, ready to go,” Holloman said. “Working on our communication, working on our formations, as we’re in the beginning of the season and getting the girls to play hard, play fast and get the ball forward as much as possible.”
During the first half of the game, however, the Bruins struggled to keep possession of the ball. Although defense stopped multiple shots at goal, the Knights managed to score one point.
Determined not to lose, SCHS changed their strategy for the second half and switched up their formation to gain more scoring opportunities. Freshman goal keeper Daniela Jimenez further emphasized the improvement and how communication helped their team do so.
“We did really good, but in the first half, we should have communicated more, saying, ‘man on,’ ‘pass back’ or ‘one touch,’” Jimenez said. “We weren’t really doing that in the first half. Second half, we got better.
During the second half of the game, the Bruins worked hard, deploying their strategies. Their new formation resulted in forward and defender sophomore Rylee Alas and defender freshman Tsehai Melendez both securing goals, bringing the final score to 2-1.
Holleman feels the Bruins did an excellent job with their game, even if it was a struggle in the start, noting the team worked hard to turn it around.
“We weren’t responding and reacting to them. We were making them react to us,” Holleman said. “We put in a few plays from corners as well as set pieces that I felt like we capitalized on, and we looked a lot better this game than we have in the previous games.”
