On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the SCHS varsity boys volleyball team played their closing game of the season against the MacDonald High School Condors. Despite the tough match, the Bruins pulled through and won their senior night game 3-1.
Going into his last game, senior outside hitter Tatsuya Ware felt eager and prepared.
“I felt really excited. It’s my senior night. I’ve been playing the sport for a really long time, and I’ve gone through a couple senior nights myself. I really want to experience it for myself,” Ware said.
Starting off the first set strong, the Bruins secured the win 25-15 due to Tatsuya’s consistent serving and hits. The initial win, however, seemed to make the Bruins overconfident, and they lost the second set 21-25.
Coach Brian Baltazar pointed out that was a key point in the game, where the Bruins realized losing was a possibility.
“I think they realized that this isn’t just fun and games,” Baltazar said. “They have a game to play and a game to win.”
During the third and final set, the Bruins cleaned up the game and made sure to win with some decisive calls from freshman Lucas Yen and powerful spikes from senior Elias Carrillo.
With a final spike from Ware, the Bruins ended the game with a set score of 25-22. Despite the 3-1 victory, senior libero Anthony Catlett reflected on his performance and understands there will always be something to work on.
“My strategy was just playing my own game and doing my best, which would better help the team overall,” Catlett said. “I can improve on being louder and talking more because I think I struggle with that.”
Like Catlett, Carrillo acknowledged that the game could have gone better but felt enthusiastic having ended the season on a win.
“Our mindset was just ball out. It’s our last game, so just leave it on the court,” Carrillo said. “It (the game) was a little bit rocky, but I’d say we redeemed ourselves.”
