Several P.E. classes were instructed to take shelter inside on Wednesday, due to concerns about an intruder on campus.

The incident occurred toward the end of fifth period, when the P.E. classes were still outside. According to an email that principal Gregory Shelby sent to parents, Santa Clara police told the P.E. teachers to take their classes indoors, where some remained for up to fifteen minutes.

The police had come onto campus as a precaution, due to an arrest being made in the area. Shelby’s email explained that a suspect had fled from Kiely Avenue into an apartment complex behind the school. Officials were concerned that the suspect might try to enter SCHS’s campus through the athletic area.

Senior Cindy Chou said that her P.E. class had just finished a long run when they were told to shelter immediately in the locker room. Despite worried comments from students, Chou did not find the situation frightening. “We were in the locker room, and that’s probably the safest place to be, since there aren’t windows or anything,” she said.

The police had told the P.E. teachers to go into shelter-in-place, a term meaning that students and teachers must stay inside, but that a full lockdown is not necessary.

The suspect the police were chasing never came onto campus, nor within sight of the school fence. The police department notified the school as soon as the suspect was arrested, and P.E. teachers were told to release their students.
