The Bruins football team managed to shutout the Grizzlies at Friday’s game.

The Bruins varsity football team won their first preseason home game Friday night against the Gunderson Grizzlies, ending with a score of 31-0.

The Grizzlies, from the West Valley league, ended last season 1-9, posing a worthy opponent for the Bruins, which ended last season with the same record in the De Anza league. At the game, however, the Bruins dominated completely.

By the end of the first quarter, the team was already up 13-0 with touchdowns from wide receivers Pako Vehikite and Darius Jones Dorsey. For the rest of game, the team’s defense also managed to keep Gunderson scoreless.

“I have no idea where that defense came from, they just played their butts off. It was a great job from those guys,” varsity coach Hank Roberts said.

Along with keeping Gunderson scoreless, safety Marquise Shields scored a touchdown off of an interception, known as a pick six.

“Shields stood out to me tonight. He is the best safety in CCS without a shadow of a doubt,” Roberts said.

After the first two victories of the season, beating Alisal High last week, running back Hadkeem Watts maintains high hopes for the rest of the season, despite last year’s 1-9 losing record.

“I think we will beat out every opponent. Including Wilcox,” Watts said.

The team’s next game will be on Friday, Sept. 18 at home against San Lorenzo Valley.
