One Direction goes from five boys to four men with new album
Music Appreciation Week
With the release of their fifth album, “Made in the A.M.” earlier this month, One Direction took a break from their classic pop music to a more mature vibe that is sure to please more than their young fanbase.
With the departure of Zayn Malik earlier this year, the album only consists of four voices, starting the era of After Malik or A.M., which obsessive fans have made the A.M. in the album’s name stand for. Even without Malik’s high notes, however, the band’s fan base is sure to be captivated.
The new album starts with “Hey Angel.” It fits perfectly as the album opener with its catchy, upbeat sound that lightens anyone’s mood.
All the songs are different from each other, creating an enjoyable diversity, unlike previous albums like “Four” and “Midnight Memories.” Those two mostly consisted of high beat and sing-along songs like “No Control” and “Best Song Ever.”
In this album, though, each track consists of complex lyrics 1D fans haven’t seen before. Even the beat and background music is just so different. For example, “Never Enough” starts with a sound that seems like it belongs in the Disney movie, “The Jungle Book,” with its upbeat tune and jazz-like melodies.
The standard edition of “Made in the A.M.,” ends with the song “History.” This fairly slow-paced song ends the album nicely with its campfire vibe, and lyrics describing the band’s own unending history.
As a Directioner, I automatically fell in love with this album, but even those who aren’t huge fans of the band will be able to see what I see: new music, growth, raw emotion, and heart. 1D’s music isn’t so “boy band” anymore.
I loved how most songs were written by the boys, which added noticeable personal touches and gave insight to the singers’ personalities and lives outside of the band. “Perfect” made a subtle reference to Harry Styles’s ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift with the lyric, “If you’re looking for someone to write your break up songs about. Baby, I’m perfect.” The two singers broke up in 2013, a few months before Swift released “I Knew You Were Trouble,” which is allegedly about Styles.
Overall, One Direction’s fifth album is a success, I’ve been playing the album on replay all week, but my favorite song has to be “End of the Day” with its rock beats and guitar solos. The chorus is my favorite part: all four of them sing together.
And I love it.
