The Bruins varsity football team lost to the Gunderson Grizzlies Saturday night at Levi’s Stadium, 14-19.

The Bruins finished their first quarter without a touchdown, but quarterback and junior Christopher Brown ran a touchdown during the second quarter, re-energizing the team as well as the SCHS fans.

Bruins cheered on the team with roaring excitement. Masses of students wearing blue and yellow, showing off their school spirit, were packed into the stands. Many teachers also showed up to the game to encourage the Bruins.

The score was tied by the middle of the second quarter, but the defensive line was unable to stop Gunderson from making their second touchdown. At halftime, Gunderson was ahead 13-7.

“Recent history says Gunderson isn’t in the best of shape and we should beat them in the second half. To do it, we’ll just need to keep our heads up and stay positive,” Principal Gregory Shelby said during halftime.

In the third quarter, wide receiver Richard Corona scored a touchdown, pulling the Bruins closer to a possible win. Corona also scored the extra point, inching them even closer to victory.

At the end of the fourth quarter, Gunderson scored another touchdown, which led to their win.

Despite the loss, the Bruins stayed positive.

“I could have done better coaching. I was just terrible today. They were doing fine, but I just put them in bad positions,” head coach Hank Roberts said.  By not punting the ball, SCHS allowed Gunderson to have only fifty-eight yards to run instead of ninety, Roberts said.

Although there was disappointment due to the loss, everyone stayed positive and cheered on the Bruins. The Bruin family stayed assured of the hard work the team had put into the game and didn’t let their heads down.

This game was non-conference, meaning that it does not affect how they place within their league.

“Despite a  win or a loss, we still played our hearts out. There were a lot of positives in the game.  Corona with the touchdown, [Brown] passing the ball,” said linebacker and wide receiver Pako Vehikite.

According to Vehikite, mentality is just important as physicality in football.

“I think we were more physical than they were and made better plays than they did. It’s just the little mental things that we messed up,” Corona said.
