Searching for the right career pathway allows students to learn more about themselves and their interests.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” The question not many people know how to answer and many others have known for a long time.

Junior Evonne Bergman is certain that she wants to continue her education in the STEM field, hoping to later become a pediatrician.

“I was always friends with people with similar interests, passions and goals. However, it wasn’t until this year when I knew I wanted to specialize in pediatrics,” Bergman said.

Bergman has started a club on campus with others also dreaming of the pediatric field. Their club, SC Pediatrics, teaches students to achieve their goal in the field as well as find opportunities for community service and internships.

“This year, I’ve prioritized my time to making connections with people who enjoy the sciences as much as I do,” Bergman said. “You can challenge yourselves together, motivating each other to be your best selves.”

In another career field, freshman Sammy Herrera has learned to express herself after taking a special interest in the music industry.

“Learning about it (music) made me realize that music can say a lot without words,” Herrera said. “It can be a story. It can make you feel happy or sad.”

Like Herrera, senior Lana Satana aims to expand her music knowledge and passion in order to support music education.

“I think it’s very important to foster music and the arts in younger generations,” Satana said. “Music is a crucial part of our society, and understanding and learning to appreciate it is something that I think everyone should be able to do.”

For many, finding the inspiration to pursue one’s future is difficult. Herrera has found her motive in the voices surrounding her.

“Finding people to look up to, whether that’s my music teacher or people who are professionals in the music industry, will help me,” Herrea said. “Just looking at what they did to get where they are and what inspired them.”

When people expose themselves to more opportunities, they often open doors to exciting opportunities and hidden talents.

“I believe that the only way to discover things you are passionate about is to first, try new things, and second, to understand that while you might not enjoy everything you try, there’s bound to be something you will,” Herrera said. “You should never stop trying.”
