With more than a decade of experience in the nursing field, Brando Gorlero brings his expertise to SCHS as the new school nurse. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from La Sierra University, starting his path toward the nursing field. Gorlero went on to earn his master’s in education from Clairmont Graduate University, a doctorate from Southern California University of Health Sciences and a nursing degree from Azusa Pacific University.
After graduating as a registered nurse, Gorlero worked in hospitals and taught at Azusa Pacific University before becoming a school nurse. Upon entering a school nursing profession, Gorlero noticed that it included a close-knit community, a facet where SCUSD’s nursing team is highly regarded. This distinction drew Gorlero to the district.
“I wanted to join this well-known, well-reputed nursing team,” Gorlero said. “I want to be part of that.”
Gorlero’s career in the medical field began with his mother. During his childhood, he spent a lot of time watching his mother work as a dental assistant, urging him to pursue a similar career.
“Growing up, I used to see my mom wearing scrubs all the time,” Gorlero said. “I just assumed she was a nurse, and I just knew that I wanted to do what she was doing.”
Looking back on the path Gorlero took to reach his nursing career, he advises Bruins interested in a medical profession to volunteer at hospitals. He shared how volunteering gives people the opportunity to test the waters and familiarize themselves with the hospital environment.
“You get the idea of if you want to do this for the rest of your life. You see real nurses, real doctors doing their job because you get to work around them,” Gorlero said.
Gorlero remembers the times when high school students would volunteer and how he would actively include them in his work.
“If ever I saw a volunteer, usually high schoolers, I would invite them into the rooms with the patient so they could see me as a nurse interacting with the patient and see that dynamic and how that works. It’s worth it,” Gorlero said.
Gorlero attributes much of his career choice to his compassionate personality and the will to be there for others.
“My personality is one of caring, wanting to take care of people, to help people. That’s partly my personality, that I wanted to serve and help,” Gorlero said.
