As the holiday season shifts from spooky to spirited, I love to spend my downtime with television. Toward the end of the year, holiday movies are great options for relaxation, but choosing which movie to watch can be a struggle. Whether one is looking for something heartwarming, a comforting classic or a good laugh, the following list contains my top five holiday movies.
The Grinch (Animated Version)
Age Group: All
Released in 2018, the newest animated addition to the Grinch franchise, “The Grinch,” takes a modern twist on the classic, well-loved tale of a bitter outcast with a rigid heart who finds kindness in unexpected places. This movie follows the Grinch, an introverted, grumpy and overall “evil” misunderstood character who despises Christmas and everything related to it. He believes that all the Whos down in Whoville are annoying due to their overwhelming Christmas cheer. Because of little Cindy Lou Who’s kindness, however, the Grinch opens his heart and experiences the contagious Christmas spirit for the first time. This animated adaptation is enjoyable for any age group, from children to teens and even parents, as the dialogue and storyline are amusing and heartfelt all at once. “The Grinch” teaches an impactful lesson on kindness for younger audiences and reminds older age groups of the importance of acceptance.
Elf
Age Group: All
“Elf” is a blend of fantasy animation and live-action characters. Combined with a bittersweet storyline and lots of Christmas cheer, it is easily one of the best holiday movies. Buddy, a human raised by Santa Claus’ elves, journeys to the great New York City to find his naughty-list registered father. Buddy loves Christmas more than anything, which makes him the complete opposite of many of the people he meets during his journey. Even though Buddy is an adult, his childish and energetic personality makes all those who come in contact with him a little more cheerful. Although the movie is sad at times, the overall lesson of optimism and unconditional love is one for any age group to enjoy on cozy family movie nights.
Four Christmases
Age Group: 15+
Released in 2008, “Four Christmases” is a more mature, holiday rom-com. Set in San Francisco, this film is perfect for older audiences hoping to get a laugh before holiday celebrations. “Four Christmases” exposes the struggles of a happy couple, Kate and Brad, as they are forced to participate in four different celebrations with their deranged families. They learn more and more about each other’s past and the magic of Christmas. This movie is perfect for teenagers and older audiences as the humor is more mature than the other movies on this list but just as entertaining. The characters are hilarious, relatable and sometimes a little crazy, making the movie engaging and easy to follow. Ultimately, “Four Christmases” is a hysterical rom-com that is worth the watch.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Age Group: All
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” has been a beloved Christmas classic for decades. Released in 1964, it continues to be enjoyed by many as it has the perfect, cozy, Christmas vibe. Suitable for any age but especially younger children, it is a stop-motion claymation that shows the life of Rudolph, a reindeer with a bright red nose that makes him a target for many of his peers and even his family. Rudolph experiences bullying, causing him to go on a journey of self-acceptance and bravery. The classic teaches children to avoid bullying and accept each other’s differences as this is what makes them who they are. Rudolph is an easily lovable protagonist who runs into other captivating characters with hilarious dialogue and catchy singing numbers. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” is a classic for a reason and continues to be adored and treasured for generations, making it a must-watch for this holiday season.
The Year Without Santa Claus
Age Group: All
Although chaotic, the “Year Without a Santa Claus” is extremely enjoyable and comical. Much like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” it has been adored since its release in 1974. While many enjoy Rudolph for its message of kindness, this movie is made special by its engulfing and nostalgic soundtrack. Songs such as “Blue Christmas” and “Here Comes Santa Claus” encapsulate the nostalgic, warm, comforting tone that Christmas brings to many every December. This movie is perfect for younger children as the characters are engaging and the claymation style makes it fascinating to watch. Additionally, the scenery created throughout the film includes snowy landscapes and comforting homes filled with Christmas spirit, making it a perfect watch for holiday movie lovers of all ages.
