‘The Roar’ receives several awards from local press club

Current co-Editor-in-Chief Shana Vu and next year’s Editor-in-Chief represented Santa Clara High’s newspaper at the awards ceremony in Redwood City, Calif.

Santa Clara High’s school newspaper, The Roar, took second place for general excellence in the Peninsula Press Club’s annual Student Journalism Contest, which honors high school newspapers in the Peninsula and South Bay.

In addition to the award for general excellence, The Roar earned a second place and two honorable mentions in the competition.

This year, the contest drew 365 entries in 13 categories, with 42 winners named. The Roar’s current co-editor-in-chief Shana Vu and next year’s editor-in-chief Tomás Mier received the awards at a ceremony held in the San Mateo County History Museum Thursday.

The Roar’s specific winners are listed below:

  • 2nd place for General Excellence for this year’s December, February and April issues;
  • 2nd Place for the editorial “California teacher tenure laws not the problem” (December) by Sophia Kakarala in the Editorial category;
  • Honorable Mention for the Focus spread “Your Brain on Drugs” (December) by Sophia Kakarala, Ellie Houseman, Joseph Hughes, and Daniel Huynh in the Features category;
  • Honorable Mention for the Front Page story “Students in the Shadows” (December) by Theodora Vojnovic in the Features category
