Bruins football team loses to Wilcox Chargers

The Bruins varsity football team lost Friday night against their cross-city rivals the Wilcox Chargers, 27-55.

This game marked the 36th consecutive year that SCHS has fallen to Wilcox in football. With the loss, the Bruins share the same record of 4-1 with the Chargers.

Near the end of the second quarter, the Chargers shut out the Bruins, leading with a score of 21-0.

One of the Bruins captains, running back Hadkeem Watts, was forced to stand on the sideline for the entirety of the match, unable to play due to an injury.

“Our guys fought through a bunch of adversity – losing Hadkeem, and then that opening kickoff really hurt. We just had to keep fighting,” head coach Hank Roberts said.

The Bruins had scored a touchdown right after the kickoff, only to see a flag on the play and the removal of the points.

Throughout the game, quarterback Chris Brown threw four touchdowns: two to wide receiver Marquise Shields,  and one each to Erick Arevalo and Pako Vehikite.

“It could’ve been closer. We should’ve won, but you just have to look forward and look to the playoffs. We know we’re going to make it, we’re the better team,” Brown said.

The Bruins scored half of their points in the 4th quarter, closing the gap to 27-55, but leaving no time to catch up to the Chargers.

“We’ll get over it. We will be in the film room tomorrow morning, finding ways to get better,” Roberts said.

The Bruins will next face Cupertino High at home at 7 p.m. for a league game.
