Bruins football team headed to Salinas for CCS playoffs

Four years ago, the SCHS varsity football team became the El Camino league champions. This year, the Bruins ended their season 9-1 overall, reclaiming the title, and earning themselves a spot at the Division IV CCS playoffs.

This Friday evening, the Bruins will be facing the North Salinas Vikings in Salinas.

The Vikings closed their season with an 8-2 record overall and will represent the Monterey Bay Pacific football league.

Heading into the Division IV CCS playoffs, SCHS is guaranteed at least one game, against North Salinas. In the same Division IV playoff bracket will be: Mt. Pleasant, Aptos, Soledad, Silver Creek, Westmont, and Hillsdale High School. The winning team in the division will be determined at the end of three elimination rounds.

As of February 2015, CCS enacted a rule that will only allow teams of similar skill level to face each other in playoffs. Since the Bruins are a C-level team, they will only be facing other C-level teams.

“They are going to be the same teams like us so hopefully we can come out as CCS champions,” running back Andrew Del Rosario said.

After becoming El Camino League champions in 2011, the team moved to the upper De Anza League in 2012, but moved back down for this season.

Next season, the team will lose almost half of the current team since 18 seniors will be graduating. However, head coach Hank Roberts sets that aside.

“It’s awesome for these seniors, they’ve heard every negative thing,” Roberts said, “now here we are, the league champions.”

The Bruins play North Salinas High in the first round of the Division IV CCS Playoffs this Friday at 5 p.m.at Rabobank Stadium, 1034 N. Main Street, Salinas.
