Australian basketball team took on Bruins

The Bruins varsity boys basketball team won their game last Monday with a score of 62-29. But not just against any team, they defeated Wesley College’s basketball team from Melbourne, Australia.

Wesley College visited Northern California and set up basketball games against local schools. The Australian basketball program emailed head coach Tony McGilvery and set up a game. Students from Wesley College also shadowed SCHS students on Tuesday, visiting classrooms and even speaking on the daily announcements.

At the game, SCHS point guard Lav Jovanovic and wing guard Jordan McGilvery led the team with constant 2-pointers during the first half, creating a lead that allowed the Bruins to dominate the court. At halftime, the Bruins led by 16 points, 23-8.

Despite the lopsided final score, coach Tony McGilvery said the match was still a great opportunity since the two schools are located so far apart.

Senior wing guard Ricky Olvera agreed.

“I felt a good vibe from them and they definitely put their heart in the game. It was a friendship game, and it’s probably the closest to Australia I’ll get,” Olvera said.
