OPINION: Leonardo DiCaprio: A king without a crown

Since starring in his first movie “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” in 1993,  Leonardo DiCaprio has amazed viewers such as myself with his jaw-dropping talent.  But DiCaprio is missing an important thing in his career: an Oscar.

The 88th Academy Awards ceremony, commonly referred to as the Oscars, is being held this Sunday to honor the best films of 2015. Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated for the award of best lead actor for his latest movie, “The Revenant,” in which he plays  a legendary frontiersman left for dead by his hunting team and forced to utilize his survival skills to return home to his family.

In Oscar history, DiCaprio has been nominated four times without winning. He better win this time.

How does a person with so much talent not win an Oscar? Winning an Oscar is the holy grail of the acting business, and DiCaprio has proven his striking talent in every acting role he has had, from a mentally challenged youth in “Gilbert Grape”  to the frontiersman in “The Revenant”.

In all of his movies, he captures the heart of his role. He becomes the character, effortlessly winning the attention of the audience. He manages so many different personas, and all of them are convincing.

In his performance in the blockbuster  “Titanic” (1997), he moved the audience in ways few actors have, and became a sensational heartthrob.

Then in “The Revenant”,  he gave a raw and intense performance, going through physical and psychological extremes – eating raw bison, stripping naked in sub-zero temperatures and jumping into an icy river – to make the movie successful.

Not only does he have talent, but he has experience. DiCaprio, 41, has starred in a total of 24 movies.  He started acting at age 14 in the TV show “Parenthood” (1990). When he was 19, DiCaprio starred in his first film (“Gilbert Grape”) , and was nominated for an Oscar for it.

This man was nominated for an Oscar at the age of 19. Doesn’t that say something?

In a Yahoo! article, Tom Butler, a deputy movies editor for the online site, states that DiCaprio doesn’t deserve an Oscar because he has chalked up a string of “very good” performances, but none that are “career-defining.”

I disagree. He is a unique actor who has the ability to play any role, and completely own it.  His performance in “The Revenant” was mind-blowing. DiCaprio needs to win an Oscar, not only because the public adores him and his acting, but because he deserves one.
