Girls varsity water polo loses to Monta Vista after a tight game

Yesterday afternoon, the SCHS girls varsity water polo team took to the pool to face Monta Vista. The game was close throughout. However, Monta Vista held on in the battle, beating Santa Clara 14-12.

Santa Clara started off hot scoring 30 seconds into the game with a goal by junior Anika Mujushi. But Santa Clara failed to close out the first quarter, trailing 5-3 by the start of the second.

The Bruins began turning things around in the second quarter, scoring a game-high 6 goals.

Santa Clara’s offensive attack was praised by their coach as the team began scoring at ease.

By the half, the Bruins pulled in front of Monta Vista, leading 9-8.

Santa Clara started off the third quarter slowly with Monta Vista scoring 3 unanswered points to gain the lead again.

The Bruins were resilient and fought back to tie the game at 11 with goals by juniors Emily Grossman and Annika Mujushi.

Well within the fourth quarter, both teams played intensely. Santa Clara was able to recapture the lead with a goal by senior Maddie Higginson, who scored a team-high four goals in the game.

However, the Bruins were unable to hold on to their lead, conceding 3 unanswered goals to end the game 14-12.

Despite losing a tight game, the Bruins have a quick turn around, hosting Homestead on Thursday. The Bruins currently sit at 7-4 and are looking for double digits wins this year.
