REVIEW: “Thor: Ragnarok” is an entertaining mix of comedy and action

Marvel’s box office triumph “Thor: Ragnarok” was released on Friday, Nov. 10. The movie has topped the $650 million mark on its opening weekend, and with its laid-back humor and enthralling action scenes, it’s projected to make a lot more over the next coming weeks.

The movie showcases Marvel’s newfound talent of blending comedy into the storyline. One of the funniest scenes is when the Hulk and Thor are thrown into a forced fight against each other, and Thor announces giddly to the crowd that “He’s a friend from work,” in reference to their work together as the Avengers.

The film’s hilarity is all thanks to director Taika Waititi. According to an online interview with Vanity Fair, Chris Hemsworth, the actor who plays Thor himself, had a very open dialogue with Waititi throughout the filming process. After the depressing tones of the Avengers movies, Hemsworth wanted a film that was funnier and unpredictable. As a result, the audience got to see one of the most twisted villains in the Marvel universe, Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddelston), humanized through brilliantly written dry humor. This ridiculously silly movie makes viewers feel like they’re reading a comic book instead of an emotionally draining war novel.

Looking for the typical Marvel action-drama filled with tense emotional scenes and a lot of civilian deaths? Steer clear of this movie. After watching “Thor: Ragnarok,” walking out of the theater will feel like flying away with Mjolnir.
