SCHS student attacked while at a Trump rally

Junior Brian Abaoag was attacked by a group of anti-Trump protesters last week as he was leaving a Donald Trump rally in San Jose.

The rally at the San Jose Convention Center was an attempt by Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee,  to gather existing supporters and gain new ones from the generally left-leaning state of California. The rally also attracted various political neutrals such as Abaoag who were simply curious to see a presidential rally in their home county.

Those attending the rally, however, were met by the punches and jostling of various angered protesters outside the convention center as they attempted to leave. The protesters expressed their disapproval and anger for the candidate and his supporters.

“While I was watching a large fight blocking my way, three men came up to me, pushed me to the ground, and tore and burned the poster I had obtained,” Abaoag said.

Police blockading of the surrounding streets allowed only a few routes of exit from the rally. According to Abaoag, the officers present were spread thin over the area.

“There were only a few police at every block, so I was lucky that some police intervened to help me out. After that, I ran to my car as quickly as I could,” he added.

Despite being attacked, Abaoag said he holds no grudge against those who attacked him, and understands their view.

“I get that they’re angry at Trump and the controversial things that he has said, but I don’t think violence is the way to change someone’s political viewpoint,” Abaoag said.
